Mexico is by far the main consumer of avocados worldwide. They have been consumed by the Mexican population way before the Europeans arrived. The United States as a country is the second largest consumer although on a per capita basis it is surpassed by Israel and Peru, two other major avocado producing countries.
The worldwide consumption rate has increased dramatically over the last twenty years. However as can be seen by the huge difference in per capita consumptions above, the industry reflects a significant potential for growth.
Avocado consumption has been tremendously aided by the macro trends in health consciousness. Few other food products contain the rich mix of proteins, minerals and vegetable oils.
